We come from the village of Hotevilla. Our dedication to supporting small businesses and our general disregard for convention is rooted deeply in our cultural foundation. We view supporting local native businesses as having cultural resilience. Partially as having and supporting the collective Hopi/Indigenous identity, and also encouraging self esteem.
We want to show by our actions that having a small business can be done, building with purpose and having sustainable growth is possible for Hopi Small Businesses.
In a world where there is an ever increasing pressure to transform and give in to global change, part of why we have sustained ourselves this long as Hopi people, was that we held on stubbornly to our positive balance of our culture and the outside world.
Respect for the community, respect for self, but adapt to ensure success of the future are hallmarks of Hopi teaching. Appreciation for our origins, our history and cultural ties.
We are told by our elders to inspire today those who will be able to embrace change so we can thrive in the future, but not forget we also have our duties to uphold our cultural values.
This also means when we support Native businesses, we are upholding that lesson about taking care of our community and each other.
Askwali/Kwa’kwa for being here with us for this journey as it is truly a pleasure to have you as our guests at Hopi Studio.
